Erasmus Tycho

Erasmus Tycho was a Captain of the Blood Angels 3rd Company and, for a time, the Chapter’s presumed heir to Chapter Master Dante. Of the sons of Baal, he was accounted among the most gifted commanders of his generation, a status that placed him in close and continual proximity to Dante himself as the two fought alongside one another across successive campaigns. That standing did not survive the First War for Armageddon, where an Ork weirdboy’s psychic malice seized half of Tycho’s face into a fixed, rictus grin. The Blood Angels, ever watchful for signs of the Flaw that shadows their gene-line, found the disfigurement intolerable to look upon precisely because of what it suggested about a warrior so favoured. Tycho took to wearing a grille mask over the ruined half of his face and never spoke of the succession again; his hatred of the Orks, already sharp, hardened into something the Chapter’s Sanguinary Priesthood watched with quiet unease.

Tycho returned to Armageddon for its second war, fighting at Taladorn among other engagements, and there and elsewhere took part in the Blood Angels’ running battles against a Tyranid hive fleet. His conduct in that campaign was severe enough that the Sanguinary Priesthood formally questioned his mental fitness, a judgement that marked him thereafter as a captain whose gifts and instability had drawn level with one another. He remained in command of the 3rd Company regardless, respected for his battlefield record even as his fitness for higher office was quietly set aside.

By the Third War for Armageddon, fought against Ghazghkull Thraka’s renewed Waaagh!, the Chaplains who studied Tycho’s bearing recognised in it the same shadow that is said to fall across Astartes nearing the Black Rage: the echo of Sanguinius’ death at the End of Days. He was assigned to the Death Company rather than held back, a decision that placed the Chapter’s judgement of him beyond doubt. Tycho died in that state, breaking down the walls of Hive Tempestora during the fighting to reclaim the hive city from the Orks, his end folded into the same war that had first cost him his face.

The Dead Man’s Hand, the relic weapon associated with his name, survives him as an object of remembrance within the Chapter. Tycho’s career is recalled less for any single victory than for what it demonstrates about the Blood Angels’ condition: that even a captain marked out as a future Chapter Master can be claimed, by degrees and across decades, by the inheritance the Chapter carries from Sanguinius.
