Corbulo
Sanguinary High Priest, Keeper of the Red Grail
Also known as Keeper of the Red Grail
Homeworld: Baal
Corbulo is the Sanguinary High Priest of the Blood Angels Space Marine Chapter, keeper of the Red Grail and steward of its gene-seed. He heads the Sanguinary Priesthood, the Chapter’s body of Apothecaries and priests, and is regarded within the Chapter as its foremost authority on the Flaw, the hereditary affliction that descends from the primarch Sanguinius. His features resemble those of Sanguinius so closely that recruits are told plainly that he is not the primarch returned. The likeness is a matter of record, and it is one reason the Chapter treats his counsel with particular gravity.
His place in the Chapter’s story is bound to Baal, the Blood Angels’ home world, and to the Baal system, whose moons Baal Secundus and Baal Prime supply much of the Chapter’s recruitment and its defence. Accounts of his origins and early career are sparse, and this dossier does not supply what the record leaves open. His role is better attested than his biography. As Chief Apothecary he oversees the recovery of gene-seed from fallen battle-brothers, the care of the wounded, and the management of the Black Rage and the Red Thirst, which the Chapter cannot ignore in any campaign. He remained in service through the Devastation of Baal, when the Tyranid Hive Fleet Leviathan reached the Chapter’s home system, an episode in which preserving the Chapter’s future weighed as heavily as holding its fortress-monastery. Later tradition holds that he continues to describe blood as a duty rather than a curse.
Corbulo works alongside the Chapter’s other principal figures, and their duties are distinct. Commander Dante directs the Chapter’s wars. Mephiston, the Lord of Death and Chief Librarian, is recorded as having survived a trial that should have destroyed him, and the Sanguinary Priesthood’s care is part of that history. Lemartes, Guardian of the Lost, commands the Death Company, the battle-brothers claimed by the Black Rage, and works from the same premise as Corbulo: that the Chapter’s losses must be managed and not simply endured. Corbulo keeps its battle-brothers fit to fight, and the Sanguinary Priesthood follows his lead most closely when the effects of the Flaw are at their most severe.
In the current era Corbulo is recorded as active, with the Red Grail in his keeping. The Chapter’s continued existence depends on gene-seed recovered and preserved one battle-brother at a time. On the Orrery map his anchor is Baal, and on the timeline he is tied to the Blood Angels through the Devastation of Baal. Readers following the Chapter’s wider history can trace the same events through Sanguinius, Dante and Mephiston.
