Plague of Unbelief
The Plague of Unbelief was a crisis of faith on Ophelia VII in the wake of the Age of Apostasy and Goge Vandire’s Reign of Blood. Ophelia VII was Vandire’s birthworld, and once his tyranny at the head of the Ecclesiarchy had been ended, the world’s own faith in the Adeptus Ministorum is recorded as having faltered badly, giving the episode its name. It matters chiefly as a local aftershock of one of the Imperium’s gravest institutional crises, tying Ophelia VII’s history directly to the empire-wide reckoning that followed Vandire’s fall. The unrest is said to have spread through Ophelia VII’s shrines and hab-cities much as a contagion would, as congregations that had endured the Reign of Blood found themselves unable, or unwilling, to receive the Ministorum’s renewed authority. Missionaries and reforming clergy moving through the neighbouring holdings of Bucharis and the wider Segmentum Pacificus reported parishes that had lapsed into silence or turned to unsanctioned observances in the Ecclesiarchy’s absence. Accounts differ on how far the disaffection spread beyond Ophelia VII itself, but it is consistently placed within the broader turmoil of the later thirty-sixth millennium, when the Imperium’s confidence in its own priesthood was tested across many worlds at once. Order returned only as the Age of Apostasy itself drew to a close, when Sebastian Thor’s reform movement re-established a chastened Ecclesiarchy and reasserted doctrinal authority across the affected reaches of Segmentum Pacificus. Ophelia VII is remembered less for the plague than for having produced the crisis that provoked it, and later tradition holds the episode up as a caution against the harm a single corrupt tenure at the Ecclesiarchy’s head could inflict upon an otherwise loyal world. The Plague of Unbelief endures in the record chiefly as a hinge between Vandire’s fall and Thor’s reforms, binding Ophelia VII’s local history to the wider Age of Apostasy aftermath.
