Astelan

Astelan is a warrior of Caliban recorded among the Fallen, the estranged kin of the Dark Angels, whose history follows the loss of their homeworld. He is associated with the knightly Order of Caliban, the martial tradition from which the Dark Angels Legion drew its earliest recruits, and with the schism that divided that Order. Canon concerning him is limited, and this entry records only what is consistently attached to the name.

Caliban was a forested world whose human inhabitants organised into knightly orders to hunt its native predators. Its later history is dominated by the arrival of the primarch Lion El’Jonson and by the rebellion of Luther, which ended in the breaking of the planet during the Horus Heresy. Astelan belongs to the generation of Caliban’s warriors caught between these events. Accounts of his individual deeds, his standing within the Order and the circumstances of his separation from the Dark Angels are not settled, and none is asserted here beyond his placement among the Fallen. His relationships with Luther’s partisans and with the Order’s loyalists are likewise not recorded with any certainty.

The Fallen are the survivors of Caliban’s ruin who did not remain under the Lion’s banner, and the Dark Angels and their successor chapters have pursued them since as an unfinished obligation. Astelan’s significance lies in that shared history, tied to Caliban in the Heresy era and to the Fallen’s hidden existence in the fortieth millennium. His present status is unknown. On Orrery he is best read alongside Caliban, Luther, Lion El’Jonson and the Dark Angels, whose careers form the setting in which his name appears.
