Corswain

Corswain was Paladin of the Ninth Order and seneschal to Lion El’Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels, in the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy. A Calibanite by birth, he is recorded as a swordsman whom other Legions ranked alongside Sigismund of the Emperor’s Children and Raldoron of the Dark Angels. He held the titles Lord Commander and, in later tradition, the Hound of Caliban, and his origin on Caliban ties him to the Legion’s oldest identity, that of the knightly Orders of the forests.

Corswain was not born into the Order, and the Lion is recorded as using that status deliberately. It allowed Corswain to act as an intermediary between the Legion’s Terran-recruited veterans and its Calibanite knights, two groups whose loyalties and customs did not always align. It also made him an officer who could be sent to any command without a Host disputing precedence. In practice the seneschal’s office made him the Primarch’s voice in matters where rank within the Legion’s Orders would otherwise have been contested.

His most widely told deeds belong to the Heresy. On Tsagualsa, accounts hold that Corswain was unable to save Alajos from Sevatar of the Night Lords. He then drove a sword through the spine of Konrad Curze, the Night Haunter, while Curze was strangling the Lion, an act that ended the confrontation between the two Primarchs. Corswain afterwards commanded half of the Dark Angels and is recorded as holding the Astronomican through the Siege of Terra. When the traitors withdrew from the Throneworld, he crossed the ruins of Terra as the Lion’s emissary. His contemporaries in these events include Sigismund, Raldoron, Alajos and Sevatar, and the Lion, whom he served throughout. On Orrery, Corswain’s life therefore spans three anchors: Caliban, where he served the Lion; Tsagualsa, where he faced Curze and Sevatar; and Terra, where he acted in the Siege’s closing stage.

Corswain’s status is listed as missing. Accounts record that he outlived Caliban, the world that gave the Hound of Caliban his epithet, and the First Legion rarely discusses that survival. The Ravenwing still value blades that bear his name, which is the clearest surviving mark of his standing among the Dark Angels. Where the record is silent on his later fate, this page does not supply it.
