Luther

Grand Master of the Order, Lord of Caliban

Also known as Luther of Caliban

Homeworld: Caliban

Luther was a knight of Caliban and Lion El’Jonson’s closest companion, whose rebellion against the Dark Angels shattered his homeworld. Recorded as the Lion’s foster-father and later his second within the Order, he held the titles Lord of Caliban and Grand Master of the Order. His significance in the wider galactic story lies in the Fallen: the schism he began is the concealed grievance that shaped the Dark Angels through ten millennia.

Luther belonged to the knightly Order of Caliban, whose warriors fought the beasts of the world’s forests and preserved a strict martial hierarchy. In the Order’s tradition he found and raised the boy who became the Lion, and he acted as the Lion’s father in every respect except blood. When the Emperor’s Great Crusade reached Caliban, the Lion took command of the Legion that bore the Order’s name and left the world to prosecute the war among the stars. Luther remained behind as the planet’s governor and the commander of its garrison, which kept the knights, their traditions and the recruitment of new Legionaries in his care. Contemporaries in this period include Zahariel and the Lion’s other Legion officers, some of whom served on Caliban and some among the fleets.

During the Horus Heresy, Luther led the Caliban garrison into open revolt, and in his attempt to retain the world Caliban was broken. Accounts differ on the exact causes and sequence, but all agree on the outcome: the conflict between Luther and the Lion, who had been like father and son, ended in open battle at Caliban. The fighting rent the planet apart, leaving its remnants in the Warp, and Luther survived the destruction. He was afterwards confined in a cell in the Rock, the fortress-monastery that came to shelter the Dark Angels’ secrets, and the survivors who had followed him, scattered through the galaxy, became the Fallen. The map anchor for his story is Caliban and its ruined fragments; the timeline anchor is the Fall of Caliban and the Dark Angels’ long pursuit of the Fallen.

For ten thousand years Luther remained a prisoner while his sons hid or were hunted, and the Chapter’s secret depends on none of its members putting a final question to him. When the Lion awoke, he found Luther still there. The substance of what passed between them is not recited by the Chapter, and Orrery does not supply what canon leaves unsaid. Luther’s present status is recorded as missing: Caliban is gone, and he remains the man who survived its destruction. His story connects most closely to the Lion El’Jonson, Caliban, the Fallen, and the Rock.
