Sammael

Grand Master of the Ravenwing

Also known as Grand Master of the Ravenwing, Master of the Ravenwing

Homeworld: The Rock

Sammael is Grand Master of the Ravenwing, the Dark Angels’ Second Company, and rider of the last known Imperial jetbike still in service. The 348th warrior to hold the office, he was inducted younger than any before him and now directs the company’s bike squadrons in their unceasing hunt for the Fallen — the Dark Angels who broke their oaths during the Order’s founding on Caliban, whose pursuit the wider Chapter is not permitted to discuss.

Sammael’s rise followed the death of his predecessor, Gideon, who was crushed beneath a Reaver Titan on Kapua and named Sammael his successor in his final moments. Sammael avenged him by destroying the Titan himself, an act that marked him as fit to lead. He went on to command the Ravenwing through the campaigns at Rastabal and the Fourth Quadrant Rebellion, and stood among the defenders of Rynn’s World against the Ork Waaagh! led by the Warlord Snagrod, a siege remembered as one of the company’s harder trials. His reputation for daring is attested by the occasion on which he rode his jetbike clear of a Thunderhawk gunship as it fell from the sky rather than abandon the field.

Within the Dark Angels’ command, Sammael’s aggression sits in deliberate contrast to his peers: he answers to Supreme Grand Master Azrael with a soldier’s deference even where their instincts differ, and his rivalry with Belial, Grand Master of the Deathwing, reflects the older tension between the Ravenwing’s speed and the Deathwing’s discipline. Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai, watchful over the Chapter’s darkest secret, is a frequent check on Sammael’s impulses in the field. These relationships place Sammael among the inner circle that knows the truth of the Fallen, a burden the rest of the Chapter is never told to carry.

Sammael’s jetbike is kept among the relics in a vault on the Rock when not ridden into battle, a relic of a Legion whose home world, Caliban, exists now only as a memory after its destruction. He is not recorded pausing to mourn either loss — the bike’s dwindling kin or the world beneath it. The Fallen remain at large across the galaxy, and the Ravenwing’s purpose under Sammael remains what it has always been: to find them, and to bring them home.
