Asmodai

Asmodai is Master Interrogator-Chaplain of the Dark Angels and Master of Repentance, an office unique to that Chapter and to the Unforgiven. He holds rank in the Inner Circle and is charged with obtaining confession from prisoners, including the Fallen, the Chapter’s own sons who broke faith during the betrayal on Caliban. He carries the crozius Censure, the power sword Catechist, and the Blades of Reason, an interrogation tool used on captives in the cells of the Rock. In his long career he has forced only two members of the Fallen to repent. Supreme Grand Master Azrael has more than once countermanded or covered Asmodai’s excesses. No birth world is recorded for him; he serves from the Rock, the Dark Angels’ mobile fortress-monastery built from the wreckage of Caliban.

In 405.M41, during the Macharian Heresy, Asmodai was a Tactical Marine of the 8th Company. He fought under Captain Elijah in the battle of Hive-Moon Sigma, a rebellious hive-moon orbiting Ceti Albus, against forces raised by the Fallen Dark Angel Malvine Rhemell. Rhemell escaped after heavy Dark Angels losses, and Asmodai vowed to find him and make him repent. He was soon elevated to Interrogator-Chaplain. In 411.M41 he captured his first Fallen, Cephesus, who died without repenting. Over the next twenty-five years he took three more who also refused; his first recorded success was Sorl Mebbon, who repented after eighteen days.

During a campaign in the Narthex Nebula, fought with the Silver Eagles Chapter to free Imperial worlds from Ork enslavement, Asmodai took command from Master Charon on Calva Senoris after hearing of a remarkable warrior leading the resistance. He attacked the resistance camp and killed those he found there until he reached the warrior, who proved to be Inquisitor Banist De Mornay of the Ordo Xenos. While Asmodai was so engaged, the Silver Eagles were surrounded and suffered heavy losses. Charon reasserted command and led a counter-attack. Azrael later left the Rock to answer the Silver Eagles’ Chapter Master, and Asmodai was confined to his chambers and the chapel; on Azrael’s return he said his only regret was not killing the Inquisitor when he had the chance.

Asmodai is recorded as having led Dark Angels against the traitors of Rhun’s palace and as having held a stand when his forces were surrounded by Daemons on the daemon world Amity. In 960.M41 he took part in the Pandorax Campaign as part of a boarding assault on the asteroid Malefus Murex. At the campaign’s end he was present with Azrael and Gabriel when Balthasar brought the Plague Marine Corpulax before them; later, on the Rock, he and Gabriel met Balthasar on his return. On a later return to Piscina IV he joined Belial in asking Azrael for Exterminatus. Some time after Pandorax he travelled to the moon Sesabo, where he captured a Black Legion traitor with the aid of Relictors under Captain Vidarna and later extracted from that prisoner the location of Epimetheus.

In the Arks of Omen, during Vashtorr’s assault on the Rock, Asmodai fought in the Vault of Banners with more than fifty battle-brothers through four waves of attackers, then led elements of the 4th and 5th Companies in a counter-assault against Gar Hathon and the Word Bearers in the Silent Sanctum. After the battle he oversaw the interrogation of captured Chaos Space Marines for word of Vashtorr’s next move. He later led Unforgiven forces to the Idolatros system for the Battle of Idolatros and took part in the boarding of Wyrmwood with Azrael, Ezekiel, and Belial. He has crossed the Rubicon Primaris and remains active in M42.
