Deumos

Deumos was a Chaplain of the Word Bearers Legion, one of the first Gal Vorbak bound to a daemon during the Legion’s turn to Chaos. A Colchisian by birth, he served among Primarch Lorgar’s officers within the Legion’s chaplaincy and stood alongside his brothers when the destruction of Monarchia, the Word Bearers’ capital, broke the Legion’s faith in the Imperial Truth.

Deumos accompanied the Word Bearers through the pilgrimage that followed Monarchia’s fall, a search for a truer object of devotion that Lorgar pursued beyond the Imperium’s borders. During the rites that grew from that search, select warriors — Deumos and Argel Tal among them — were bound in life to daemons of the warp, becoming the Gal Vorbak, later called the Anointed: an elite formation that carried daemonic essence within its own flesh and armour rather than commanding it from a distance. Accounts differ on the particular entity to which Deumos was bound and on the exact course of the transformation, but later tradition places him consistently at Argel Tal’s side as the Legion turned from persuasion toward open war.

Deumos is remembered chiefly as one of the founding Gal Vorbak, a formation whose creation marked the Word Bearers’ decisive break from the Imperium’s secular creed. His service set him among Colchisian-born officers such as Argel Tal and apart from Legion architects of the Heresy such as Erebus, the First Chaplain whose schemes operated at a greater remove from the battle line. His fate beyond the pilgrimage and the Legion’s early campaigns is not firmly recorded, and the Gal Vorbak he helped found endured as a distinct order within the Word Bearers, their origin bound to Colchis and to the pilgrimage that redefined the Legion’s purpose.
