Zardu Layak

Zardu Layak, the Crimson Apostle of the Unspeaking, was a Word Bearers apostle who served Lorgar and Horus and died at the Siege of Terra. He came from Colchis, the Legion’s homeworld, where the Word Bearers’ tradition of preaching and of speaking on behalf of gods was formed. He is recorded as the leader of the Unspeaking, a body within the Legion’s priesthood that worked quietly rather than through open sermon. His title, Crimson Apostle of the Unspeaking, reflects that leadership and his standing among the Legion’s apostles during the Horus Heresy.

In the earlier part of the Heresy, Layak is recorded as bound to the Anakatis Kul and as assisting Lorgar in the pursuit of Fulgrim through the webway. That hunt places him close to the Primarch of the Word Bearers and among the Legion’s most trusted religious officers. When the Urizen was cast aside, Layak did not follow Lorgar’s separate course. He remained with Horus, and his record shows his allegiance passing from Lorgar’s pursuit of Fulgrim to the Warmaster’s cause. Accounts of the motives behind this choice are limited, and it is best read as a change of service within the same rebellion rather than a break with the Legion’s faith.

On Terra, Layak accompanied Abaddon and Typhus in introducing Cor’bax Utterblight among the Palace’s faithful. The operation was a theological weapon directed at people whom the Emperor refused to claim as a god. The Unspeaking carried out its quiet work, while other apostles took the songs. Raldoron, first captain of the Blood Angels, killed Layak during the Siege. Colchis had taught Layak to speak for gods, but no divine intervention came before his death on Terra, and no return from it is recorded. On the Orrery map his life runs from Colchis to Terra. On the timeline it runs from the hunt for Fulgrim to the final assault on the Imperial Palace. Its neighbours are Lorgar, Horus, Abaddon, Typhus, Fulgrim and the Word Bearers.
