Kor Phaeron was Lorgar's foster father on Colchis, a mortal priest who took Astartes gifts he was never built for and spent the rest of his life making the XVII pay that bill. He turned a primarch toward gods, then toward the Warp, and called both of those piety.
He drove the Word Bearers into heresy, survived Calth by running when the Ultramarines finally understood the sermon, and has spent the millennia since playing Black Cardinal in the shadows of Sicarus. Erebus is the other knife. Kor Phaeron is the older one.
He still speaks as if Colchis were a church he can reopen. The Word Bearers still make room for that voice, which is how the Legion stays damned.
