Targutai Yesugei

Targutai Yesugei is a White Scars Stormseer, recorded as the mentor of the primarch Jaghatai Khan on Chogoris during the Great Crusade era. He belongs to the Chogorian tradition of the storm-spirits, in which the seers of the tribes and, later, the Legion’s Stormseers interpret omens and speak for the powers of the steppe sky. On Orrery he is treated as a figure of the Legion’s formative period rather than of its battles, and his surviving record is correspondingly narrow.

According to the recorded tradition, Yesugei guided the young Jaghatai among the tribes of Chogoris before the Emperor’s arrival, and the Khan’s later regard for the Stormseers is attributed in part to that upbringing. When the Legion took shape as the White Scars, the Stormseers remained a distinct voice in its councils alongside the khans. Yesugei is named among those, together with Torghun Khan, who held that the Stormseers could help keep the Legion united as the Great Crusade gave way to civil war. Shiban Khan is recorded as having come to disagree with that expectation after the Horus Heresy began. Accounts differ on how directly Yesugei took part in the fighting, and his own movements are not clearly attested.

Yesugei’s standing rests on his link to Jaghatai Khan and to the Chogorian spiritual inheritance that the Chapter preserves at Quan Zhou. His period coincides with the White Scars’ campaign against the Ork empire of the Chondax system, which the Legion abandoned when Horus’s treachery became known, and with the later journey to Terra, where the Legion arrived late in the Siege of the Imperial Palace. Contemporaries recorded beside him include the primarch, Torghun Khan and Shiban Khan. His fate is not established, and his status is therefore recorded as unknown.
