Torghun Khan

Khan of the Brotherhood of the Moon

Also known as Haren Svensellen

Homeworld: Terra

Torghun Khan, born Haren Svensellen on Terra, was a White Scars warrior of the Brotherhood of the Moon who joined a treason and died in the Sagyar Mazan. He held the title Khan of the Brotherhood of the Moon, one of the warrior lodges through which the Legion’s Chogorian culture organised its fighting men. His career belongs to the Horus Heresy era, and it is recorded across four locations: Terra, where he was born; Chondax; Chogoris, the Legion’s adopted homeworld; and Prospero.

His origin sets him apart from most of his brethren. Born a Terran, he entered a Legion whose culture rested on Chogorian tradition, and he is recorded as seeking acceptance among the White Scars through the Brotherhood of the Moon. Accounts of the period present that search for belonging as central to his character. The warrior lodges persuaded him into a treason that Chogoris did not forgive without cost. At Chondax, on Chogoris and on the road from Prospero, he stood on the side opposed to Shiban’s loyalty. The details of what he was persuaded to do, and by whom, are not fully established here, and the sequence in which these places figure in his story is best treated with caution. His contemporaries in the affair include Shiban Khan, whose loyalty defined the opposing course, and the wider White Scars leadership under Jaghatai Khan, to whom the Legion’s response to the treason ultimately fell.

When the Path of Heaven came, Torghun chose the Sagyar Mazan, the suicide brotherhood of the White Scars, and died in its service. This ended his life, and later tradition regards his final ride as an act of atonement for a name he had already compromised through involvement in the politics of others. The Sagyar Mazan is a brotherhood of warriors who accept death as the price of redemption, and his entry into it was a deliberate choice, not a sentence imposed on him.

His story is a study in the cost of belonging. Haren Svensellen achieved what he had sought, remembrance as a White Scar, but the price was the remainder of his life. Within the Orrery graph, Torghun Khan links the White Scars’ Chogorian homeworld to the Legion’s wider place in the Heresy. He also links the Terran-born recruit’s experience to the internal divisions that the treason exposed, and the Brotherhood of the Moon paid the cost in full.
