Qin Xa
Master of the Keshig
Also known as Master of the Keshig
Homeworld: Chogoris
Qin Xa was Master of the Keshig, the bodyguard of Jaghatai Khan, primarch of the White Scars, during the Horus Heresy. He is recorded as the bearer of the Tails of the Dragon and as the officer responsible for the Khagan’s personal guard. His association with Jaghatai predates the Great Crusade: he belonged to the Chogorian years of the primarch’s life and had ridden with him before the Emperor came to the steppes of Chogoris and the Legion was formed around its people. Chogoris and the Kalium Gate, where his service ended, are the two places that frame his story.
That early association gave Qin Xa standing that rank alone would not have supplied. The White Scars are described as deferring to him when he spoke, and the Keshig did not dispute his arrangement of the guard. His authority was narrow by design. Chogoris produced ordu-lords who preferred riding to rule, and Qin Xa held command only over the space immediately around his primarch. He is not recorded as leading a warband, a hunt or a fleet, and the Keshig should be read as a personal guard, not a formation of the Legion’s line. Within that space his practice was constant: he kept himself between Jaghatai and any blade raised against him.
Accounts hold that he kept Jaghatai alive through the Horus Heresy until the Kalium Gate. There Qin Xa took a wound of the kind a bodyguard is expected to take, and he did not survive it. The Kalium Gate is a Terran position, and the accounts connect it with the closing phase of the war, when the Legion’s campaign was bound to the defence of the Throneworld. The Legion’s later actions therefore continued without the companion who had served the Khan since Chogoris. The sources available to this encyclopedia do not give a detailed account of the wound or of what followed for the Keshig, and this dossier does not supply one.
Qin Xa’s place among the Khan’s contemporaries is that of a companion, not a rival or a peer in the primarch’s council. He is remembered as the guardian of the Khagan’s life, and as a member of the White Scars whose service is tied to one primarch, one homeworld and one gate. His entry is best read alongside those of Jaghatai Khan, Chogoris and the Kalium Gate, which give the surrounding chronology.
