Badab War

The Badab War was a decade-long secessionist conflict fought between 901 and 912.M41 in the Maelstrom Zone, a Warp-scarred region of the Eastern Fringe, after the Astral Claws Space Marine Chapter renounced Imperial authority over the Badab sector. Chapter Master Lugft Huron, who styled himself Tyrant of Badab, had governed Badab and the wider Badab system for more than a century as one of the Maelstrom Warders, a body of Chapters charged with guarding the region. Under this unusually broad mandate Huron built a private fleet and taxation structure that increasingly resembled an independent polity, withholding gene-seed tithes and restricting trade routes under the guise of security. When the Administratum moved to curtail these privileges, Huron issued his Articles of Just Secession rather than submit, and drew several allied Chapters into open rebellion alongside him, among them the Mantis Warriors and the Executioners, and, more reluctantly, the Lamenters, whose depleted numbers left them vulnerable to coercion into the Secessionist cause. The Imperial response was slow to organise but eventually formidable. Early command fell to High Marshal Bannus of the Star Phantoms, whose costly and equivocal handling of the campaign was later judged a contributing factor in the war’s prolongation. Overall Imperial command passed through Lord Commander Verant Ortys, who was killed in the fighting, and then to Carab Culln of the Red Scorpions. Reinforcement arrived in the form of the Fire Hawks, who abandoned the Secessionists for the Loyalist cause, together with contingents from the Salamanders, the Novamarines, the Sons of Medusa, the Minotaurs under Asterion Moloc, the Carcharodons under Tyberos, and a company of Space Wolves under the young Ragnar Blackmane. The fighting ranged across the Maelstrom’s fortress-worlds and void stations, culminating in the siege of Badab Primaris, where Huron suffered the grievous wounds that later saw him remade, in body and temperament, as Huron Blackheart. The war’s end broke the Secessionist Chapters rather than reforming them. The Astral Claws were declared Excommunicate Traitoris and effectively destroyed as a Chapter of the Imperium, their scattered survivors following Huron Blackheart into the Eye of Terror to found the Red Corsairs; the Mantis Warriors were reduced to a fraction of their former strength and confined to a single fortress-monastery; and the Executioners were forcibly restructured under new Imperial oversight. The Lamenters, judged to have acted under duress, were permitted to continue as a Chapter, though the war’s toll deepened the ill fortune that had long marked their history. The settlement imposed on the surviving Chapters in the war’s aftermath shaped the Maelstrom Zone for generations to come. In the centuries since, the Badab War has stood as the Imperium’s starkest cautionary example of Chapter autonomy turned to rebellion, and as the founding wound behind the piracy and predation later visited on the Maelstrom Zone and beyond by the Red Corsairs. Huron’s first open act of rebellion was the destruction, in 901.M41, of an Imperial investigation fleet sent to Badab, and throughout the war he led many of his strike forces from the front line, favouring stalwart defence married to rapid counter-attack and flanking actions that turned his opponents’ reliance on the Codex Astartes against them. In the final battle for the Palace of Thorns he was struck down by a melta blast from the dying Star Phantoms captain Zhrukal Androcles, which destroyed the right side of his body. Most accounts place the flight of his surviving followers in the Maelstrom, where Lord Apothecary Garreon and Forge Master Armanneus Valthex rebuilt him; he emerged as Huron Blackheart, and the remnant of his Chapter took the name Red Corsairs. The Lamenters’ part in the war was directed by their Chapter Master, Malakim Phoros, whose distrust of the Adeptus Terra after an earlier castigation of his Chapter had allowed Huron to win the Lamenters to his cause. From 904.M41 the Lamenters led the Secessionist offensive into the Pale Stars, where honour-bonds dating from the Corinthian Crusade restrained their fighting with the Marines Errant; their fleet also joined the Astral Claws in destroying Battlefleet Karthago and met the Red Scorpions and the Segmentum Solar Reserve at the inconclusive Battle of Silent Reach in 906.M41. In 908.M41 the Minotaurs brought the Chapter to battle at Optera and forced the surrender of its surviving battle-brothers, after which Phoros was listed as missing and the Lamenters took no further part in the war. At its close the surviving Lamenters, together with the Mantis Warriors and the Executioners, were shown mercy by Inquisitor Jarndyce Frain and a council of five Loyalist Chapter Masters on condition of a penitent crusade.
