Carab Culln

Carab Culln is Lord High Commander of the Red Scorpions Chapter, now interred within a Leviathan Dreadnought. A native of Zaebus Minoris, he advanced through every rank the Chapter offered before attaining its highest office. He is characterised as a purity hawk, and he disliked the use of camouflage.

Culln inherited the war at Badab on the death of Verant Ortys and led loyalist forces in that conflict. He later left Inquisitor Lok on a moon overrun by Tyranids, an action the Ordo has not forgotten. During the Indomitus years he killed the Great Beast of Sarum but returned to the Chapter barely alive. He was then sealed into a Leviathan Dreadnought, which allowed the Chapter to preserve his name and service rather than bury him.

Sabius and Karagon now direct the living members of the Chapter, while Culln continues to walk in his Dreadnought chassis. His preservation accords with the Red Scorpions’ practice of not wasting gene-seed, the genetic material from which Space Marines are made.

Culln was inducted from the tribes of Zaebus Minoris and rose through the Scout and Sergeant ranks of the Red Scorpions. As a Veteran Sergeant of an Eighth Company Assault squad, and later in command of a Vanguard squad, he fought on Vraks Prime during the Siege of Vraks (826–830.M41). He took command of the Chapter’s First Company after Commander Usaml’s death on the space hulk Vulgator, and as Commander of the First and Sixth Companies he led the Red Scorpions detachment that accompanied Inquisitor Solomon Lok to Beta Anphelion IV in 850.M41 during the Anphelion Project. When the Tyranids overran the moon, Culln evacuated only his own battle-brothers, leaving Lok and the remaining Imperial forces behind — an act that earned him lasting enmity among elements of the Ordo Xenos.

After Verant Ortys was killed in the Betrayal at Grief in 906.M41, Culln became Lord High Commander and Magister Militum of the Loyalist Space Marine forces in the Badab War. He personally led several assaults, including the attack on the volcanic world of Angstrom XIII in 908.M41 (the Angstrom Incident), in which Red Scorpions and Salamanders under his and Captain Pellas Mir’san’s command ambushed a Secessionist materiel handover with the Adeptus Mechanicus of Angstrom. At the Siege of Badab Primaris his Chapter formed part of the Loyalist siege line.

During the Indomitus Crusade he was grievously wounded slaying the Great Beast of Sarum, a Tyranid bioform of Hive Fleet Kraken. Returned to the Chapter barely alive, he was interred in a Relic Leviathan Dreadnought and fights thereafter as Carab Culln the Risen. Captains Casan Sabius and Sirae Karagon assumed de facto command of the living Chapter, while Culln remains Lord High Commander de jure.
