Battle of Hades Hive

The Battle of Hades Hive was a major engagement fought within the hive city of Hades on Armageddon during the Second War for Armageddon. Imperial chronologies date the wider conflict to 998.M41, when the Ork warlord Ghazghkull Thraka returned to Armageddon at the head of a vast WAAAGH!, renewing a campaign he had begun decades earlier in the First War for Armageddon. Hades Hive, one of the industrial giants of Armageddon Secundus, held strategic value for its promethium refineries and its position within the planet’s northern hive cluster, making it a prime target as the greenskin horde drove inland from its landing zones. The hive’s defence fell to Commissar-General Sebastian Yarrick, already a figure of legend on Armageddon from his earlier single combat with Ghazghkull, in which each had marked the other for life. Yarrick rallied the Steel Legion regiments of the Armageddon Militarum, the planetary defence forces, and the hive’s own citizenry into a defence that held through sustained Ork assault, artillery bombardment and breaches of the outer hive wall. Fighting spread into the lower hive levels before Imperial reinforcement, including elements of the Adeptus Astartes and the Imperial Navy, helped turn the wider war and forced Ghazghkull’s WAAAGH! into retreat, leaving Hades Hive battered but unconquered. The battle sits within the Second War for Armageddon and is inseparable from the earlier First War for Armageddon, which established the rivalry between Yarrick and Ghazghkull that shaped the later fighting at Hades Hive. It stands alongside the war’s other defining actions across Armageddon Secundus and Armageddon Prime as evidence of the planet’s endurance under repeated Ork invasion. Armageddon itself remains a fortress world scarred by these wars, and Hades Hive is remembered within Imperial record as a place where the line held at heavy cost.
