Brother-Captain Stern

Brother-Captain of the 3rd Brotherhood

Also known as Arvann Stern, Bane of M'Kachen

Homeworld: Titan

Brother-Captain Arvann Stern commands the Grey Knights’ Third Brotherhood, a daemonhunter of nearly four centuries known as the Bane of M’Kachen. Raised and quartered on Titan within the fortress-monastery of the Grey Knights, he holds the same private war across that whole span of service: a single Lord of Change, M’Kachen, whom he has banished from the material realm on repeated occasions. Each time, the greater daemon has answered by elevating a lesser servant to act in its place, and Stern has in turn treated every such deputy as unfinished business belonging to the same campaign, rather than as a separate foe. The Chapter does not stand captains down while a named daemon remains outstanding against them, so Stern’s long tenure at the head of the Third Brotherhood is itself a record of that unresolved duel.

Stern’s service history places him at several of the more consequential Imperial actions of recent centuries. He fought through the final stages of the protracted siege of Vraks, arriving as the Ork on the fortress-world was being ground down after decades of continuous war. During the Adeptus Astartes intervention on the Fenris System, when suspicion fell on the Space Wolves’ Wulfen for taint born of the Curse of the Wulfen, Stern argued against treating the condition as corruption requiring purgation, a position that placed him at odds with elements of his own order’s customary caution toward mutation. He later led the Third Brotherhood to the daemon world of Sortiarius alongside the Dark Angels under Lazarus, a joint operation typical of the closed, mutually wary cooperation between the two Chapters when a threat exceeds what either can meet alone.

In the Season of Blood on Armageddon, Stern’s Brotherhood reached the warzone later than the main Grey Knights deployment but still fought alongside Grand Master Voldus in driving the Forces of Chaos and their allied fleet from the system, an engagement that placed Stern within the wider company of Grey Knights leadership answering directly to the Chapter’s command on Titan. Across these campaigns his instruments have remained constant: a Nemesis force weapon carried into every action, and a storm bolter mounted to Terminator plate for the void- and ship-boarding actions that daemonhunting so often demands.

Stern remains on active duty in the present era, unretired by a Chapter that holds him answerable for M’Kachen until the Lord of Change itself, not merely another of its deputies, is finally accounted for. He stands as the Third Brotherhood’s ranking officer and as the individual within the Grey Knights most closely bound to a single named daemon, a standing relationship that later tradition within the Chapter treats as its own kind of vigil.
