Triumph at Ullanor
The Triumph at Ullanor was the Imperial victory celebration that followed the destruction of the Ork empire of Ullanor during the Great Crusade. Ullanor is recorded as the seat of the largest Ork dominion the Crusade encountered, and its scale made it a threat that the Imperium chose to meet with a concentrated force rather than a series of local campaigns. The Emperor of Mankind is recorded as taking the field in person, while Horus of the Luna Wolves directed the fighting, with several Legions and their supporting Titan and Army contingents drawn into a single theatre. Once the Ork warbands had been broken and their rule over the system ended, the victory was marked with a formal triumph on the conquered world, set in the closing phase of the Great Crusade in the thirtieth millennium. Accounts differ on the precise order of events, but the occasion is consistently associated with the elevation of Horus to the office of Warmaster, which placed the military conduct of the Crusade under his command. The renaming of the Luna Wolves as the Sons of Horus is linked to the same period. The gathering of primarchs, Legion officers and Imperial dignitaries made the triumph one of the few moments when the leadership of the Great Crusade was assembled in one place. The Emperor is recorded as withdrawing to Terra soon afterwards, leaving the prosecution of the Crusade to the Warmaster, while Malcador the Sigillite and the Imperial administration on Terra continued the wider work of government. Later tradition holds that the appointment left resentment among other primarchs who had expected the office, and it is therefore often read as a preliminary step in the chain of events leading to the Horus Heresy.
