Arkio

Arkio was a Blood Angels Space Marine of the forty-first millennium who led an insurrection against the Chapter’s authority in the Baal sphere. He is recorded as a battle-brother of the Blood Angels, the Chapter descended from the Ninth Legion of Sanguinius, whose home system of Baal serves as its fortress-monastery, recruiting ground and strategic heartland. He is remembered chiefly as the figure around whom the Arkio Insurrection formed.

The insurrection was a rising within the Chapter’s own domain rather than a war against an external enemy, and it is treated on Orrery as an M41 conflict centred on Baal. Arkio is set against Rafen, a Blood Angels warrior whose service led him into the Death Company; the two had been comrades before their paths divided, and their confrontation is recorded separately as Rafen vs Arkio. Accounts differ on how far the rebellion arose from ambition, disputed loyalty, or the Chapter’s inherited afflictions, the Red Thirst and the Black Rage, which made internal division a matter of consequence for the whole Chapter. Arkio is recorded as having been defeated, and the Chapter’s leadership under Commander Dante remained in place.

Arkio’s significance is chiefly that of precedent. His rebellion shows that the Blood Angels’ home domain was not free from dissent, and that a threat to the Chapter could arise from within its own ranks as readily as from outside.
