Karlaen

Karlaen is a Captain of the Blood Angels Space Marine Chapter, listed among the commanders who defended Baal in the Devastation of Baal. He serves the Chapter founded from the Legion of the primarch Sanguinius, and his post is that of a company commander within the Chapter’s command structure under Commander Dante. Published accounts of his origins, his company and his earlier campaigns are sparse, and this dossier does not supply what the record does not state.

His attested place in the record is the defence of Baal, the Blood Angels’ home world, against the largest tendril of Hive Fleet Leviathan yet recorded. The battle is placed in the closing years of the 41st Millennium, at the time the Great Rift opened, though temporal distortion makes its exact dating uncertain. Karlaen appears among the Blood Angels captains who fought alongside Dante, the Chapter Master, and the Successor Chapter commanders gathered as the Sanguinary Brotherhood, including Gabriel Seth of the Flesh Tearers. Unlike several captains of the same battle, among them Raxiatel, Zedrenael, Sendroth, Asante and Erwin, he is not recorded as having fallen.

His significance is that of a surviving Chapter captain in the Blood Angels’ most costly engagement, one that ended with the arrival of Roboute Guilliman and the Indomitus Crusade and with Dante’s appointment as Lord Regent of the Imperium Nihilus. Contemporaries in the same window include Chief Librarian Mephiston and the warrior known as the Sanguinor. His subsequent fate is not stated, and his current status is therefore given as unknown. In the Orrery graph he is bound to Baal and to the Blood Angels at the turn of the 42nd Millennium.
