Battle of Hive Helsreach

The Battle of Hive Helsreach was the Imperial defence of an Armageddon hive city against Ghazghkull Thraka’s Ork invasion in the Second War for Armageddon. Helsreach was one of the great coastal hives of the industrial world of Armageddon, a principal centre of manufacture and a natural target for a Waaagh! seeking to break the planet’s war economy. The Ork landings of the early forty-first millennium, led by the warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, overwhelmed much of the surrounding territory and left the hive’s garrison of planetary defence forces and Imperial Guard dependent on fortification, attrition and reinforcement. The defence is chiefly associated with the Black Templars, whose forces are recorded as having come to Armageddon during the war, and with Chaplain Grimaldus, who led the Space Marines in the hive’s defence alongside its human defenders and Sisters of the Adepta Sororitas. The fighting took the form of a prolonged siege in which Ork assaults were met at the walls, in the streets and in the hive’s cathedral precincts, and in which the hive’s industrial districts were steadily lost. Accounts of the closing stages emphasise the stand made by Grimaldus and the Templars around the Hive’s sacred sites, though details of numbers and individual actions differ between recollections. Within the timeline of the Armageddon campaigns, Helsreach stands as a costly delaying action that shaped the course of the Second War, which ended with the Orks’ expulsion from the planet rather than their conquest of it. Grimaldus’s conduct is later tradition’s foundation for his standing within the Black Templars, and the hive’s ruin remained a reminder of the war when Ghazghkull returned to Armageddon in the Third War. On the Orrery map the battle is anchored to Armageddon, and on the timeline it belongs to the same forty-first-millennium sequence as the later Third War for Armageddon and the wider Black Templars crusades.
