Space Wolves

The Space Wolves are a Space Marine Chapter descended from the VI Legion of the primarch Leman Russ, raised on Fenris in the First Founding. Loyal to the Emperor and the wider Imperium of Man, the Chapter is one of the most conspicuous departures from the Codex Astartes: it retains a warband structure of twelve Great Companies rather than the standard company system, and its battle-brothers progress through informal ranks such as Blood Claw, Grey Hunter and Long Fang packs rather than fixed squad roles. The Chapter is currently led by the Great Wolf, Logan Grimnar.

Fenris, the Chapter’s homeworld, is a death world of extreme seasonal violence: a long winter freezes its oceans solid, while a brief, catastrophic summer known as the time of fire and water reshapes its coastlines and scatters its tribes. The Space Wolves draw their recruits from the warrior clans of Asaheim, the single continent spared this upheaval, and maintain their fortress-monastery, the Fang, on Asaheim’s highest peak, its summit reaching beyond the atmosphere to the Chapter’s docked starships.

As the VI Legion during the Great Crusade, the Space Wolves were held back from early campaigns before being unleashed by the Emperor, after which they earned a reputation as his instrument of judgement, tasked with punitive and excoriation campaigns against rebellious worlds. The costly Wheel of Fire campaign against a vast Ork domain reduced the Legion to a fraction of its strength and hastened its adoption of Fenrisian warrior custom. Fenrisian tradition also remembers the Night of the Wolf, an episode embodying the Legion’s standing as an agent of the Emperor’s harshest sentences.

Following the Horus Heresy, the Legion was divided in the Second Founding into the Space Wolves, who kept their parent name and independence from the Codex Astartes, and the short-lived Wolf Brothers, disbanded after their gene-seed succumbed to mutation. Leman Russ himself later departed Fenris on what is recorded as the Great Hunt and did not return, leaving the Chapter to continue under successive Great Wolves; in a later era the Space Wolves defended their fortress-monastery in the Battle of the Fang. In the present era the Chapter has cautiously accepted Primaris reinforcements drawn from Russ’s gene-line as worthy successors, while its warriors’ fierce independence and hunger for battle-glory continue to set them apart from more disciplined kindred such as the Dark Angels.
