Ulrik the Slayer

Wolf Priest of the Space Wolves

Also known as Ulrik, Wolf Priest Ulrik

Homeworld: Fenris

Ulrik the Slayer is a Wolf Priest of the Space Wolves, a Space Marine Chapter native to the death world of Fenris. As a Wolf Priest, he holds a dual office within the Chapter: he presides over its rites of death and remembrance, and he is entrusted with the recovery and preservation of the Canis Helix, the Chapter’s gene-seed, from Space Wolves who fall in battle. He carries a crozius arcanum, the badge of his office and a weapon in its own right, and he is counted among the most senior priests to serve at the Fang, the Chapter’s fortress-monastery, where his great age has made him something of a permanent fixture, and a forthright one at that.

The name Ulrik the Slayer is not an honorific bestowed lightly. It records the era before he entered the priesthood, when he was reckoned among the Chapter’s foremost killers of the Chapter’s enemies, a reputation later generations know largely through the sagas rather than through Ulrik’s own telling. On assuming the crozius, he set that role aside for another: shaping the warriors who would go on to earn their own places in the Chapter’s sagas. His authority within the Aett rests less on his early deeds than on the long record of mentorship that followed them.

Ulrik’s influence runs through several of the Chapter’s most prominent figures. He is recorded as having watched Logan Grimnar fight clear of a frozen sea early in Grimnar’s career and judged, from that display, that the Chapter would have need of him as Great Wolf, a reading later borne out when Grimnar rose to that office. Ulrik is likewise associated with the early training of Ragnar Blackmane, guiding him through the trials that mark a Space Wolves recruit’s path toward the Blood Claws and beyond. Across a long life, he has mentored more warriors who went on to be remembered in saga than most Wolf Priests live to hear recounted, and several of those he trained have since died in the Chapter’s service.

When the Fang itself came under siege during the Thirteenth Black Crusade, Ulrik’s counsel was among those sought by the Chapter’s commanders as they organised the fortress-monastery’s defence, consistent with his standing as an elder voice trusted alongside figures such as Njal Stormcaller. He remains at the Fang in the present era, continuing to instruct newer generations of Blood Claws and Grey Hunters and to tend to the Chapter’s dead, work he regards as preparation for what Space Wolves tradition calls the Wolf Time, the Chapter’s foretold final battle. His standing among the Space Wolves rests less on any single feat than on this unbroken record of shaping the Chapter’s warriors across successive generations.
