Magos Kotov

Archmagos Lexell Kotov is an expeditionary Explorator of the Mechanicus who commands the ark vessel Speranza. Before securing this command, he lost forge worlds—industrial manufacturing planets—to the Tyranids, the Dark Mechanicus, and the resource demands of his excavation of the Speranza.

With his remaining resources, Kotov led an expedition into the Halo Scar to locate Vettius Telok and the Breath of the Gods. Telok had descended into madness and sought to alter Mars and Terra. Kotov engaged him in physical combat and within the Speranza’s noosphere—the vessel’s internal data network—with unadvertised assistance from the Eldar. The conflict ended when the ark’s machine-spirit, an autonomous artificial intelligence, rejected Telok and chose Kotov, leaving the Magos in possession of the sentient craft.

Although Mars continues to recognise Kotov as a member of the Mechanicus, the Martian authorities do not extend him their trust. Having survived the loss of his prior holdings, Kotov relies upon his possession of the Speranza as his primary source of leverage and standing.
