Camba Diaz

Camba Diaz was an Inwit-born Imperial Fists captain and Lord Castellan of the Fourth Sphere, killed on the Pons Solar during the Siege of Terra. He commanded the Legion’s 50th Company and is recorded as an officer suited to garrison command, a role that carried particular weight in a Legion whose doctrine rested on the defence of fixed positions. His origin on Inwit places him among the Legion’s recruits drawn from that world, and his career connects three locations in the Orrery graph: Inwit, where he was raised; Mars, to which he travelled; and Terra, where he died.

Before the fighting on Terra, Diaz is recorded as having travelled to Mars in the company of Sigismund, the Legion’s First Captain and Champion of the Imperial Fists. The accounts available do not describe his part in that journey in detail, and it is best read as evidence of the standing he held among Rogal Dorn’s senior officers rather than as a campaign in its own right. When the Imperial Palace was organised for defence, Diaz was given the Fourth Sphere as its Lord Castellan, an appointment that placed responsibility for one section of the Palace’s defensive rings in the hands of a captain rather than of a Legion’s most prominent commanders.

Diaz met his death on the Pons Solar, at the Eternity Wall, during the Saturnine assault. By that point he had committed the 50th Company to holding the approaches to the Imperial Palace, and the company was largely spent in the effort. The bridge held less because of its construction than because defenders such as Diaz stayed on it until they could no longer fight. His contemporaries in the same window include Sigismund, who had accompanied him to Mars, and Sabik Wayland, a fellow Imperial Fist who later carried Diaz’s blade into the fighting, along with the other Castellans who held the neighbouring spheres under Dorn’s direction.

Sabik Wayland later brought Diaz’s sword, Durenda, back into the battle. The 50th Company did not recover its captain; it recovered his blade and a reputation for holding its ground to the last. Diaz is dead, and no later tradition is recorded that alters that status. Within the Imperial Fists, the reputation of the 50th Company for standing fast serves as the principal memorial to him.
