Zagreus Kane
Fabricator Locum of Mars, Fabricator-General
Also known as Fabricator Locum, Archmagos Kane
Homeworld: Mars
Zagreus Kane was the Fabricator Locum of Mars and leader of the loyalist Mechanicum during the Horus Heresy, opposing the traitor Kelbor-Hal. He is recorded as master of Mondus Occulum, one of the great forge complexes of the Red Planet, and as the principal figure through whom the priesthood of Mars kept its bond with the Emperor of Mankind at a moment when that bond was in doubt. His importance to the wider story is logistical rather than martial: the war for Terra depended on arms, armour and ammunition, and Kane’s decisions determined how much of the Mechanicum’s output reached the defenders.
The Mechanicum on Mars divided over allegiance as the Heresy widened. Kelbor-Hal, the Fabricator-General, brought his faction into alliance with Warmaster Horus, while Kane led those who remained loyal to Terra. The rupture, commonly called the Schism of Mars, is set in the opening phase of the war, and it turned the Red Planet, the Mechanicum’s seat of authority, into a contested world. Olympus Mons, the seat of the Fabricator-General, is recorded as burning in the cause of Horus. The Mechanicum’s forge-fanes, Titan Legions and adept colleges had each to choose a side, and Kane’s loyalists were, for a time, the smaller and less secure party.
When Sigismund of the Imperial Fists came to Mars seeking weapons and armour, Kane is recorded as emptying his forges into the Imperial Fists’ holds. He also moved enough of the Mechanicum away from Mars to keep Terra supplied while Kelbor-Hal’s faction held the planet’s principal seat of power. Kane then took the title of Fabricator-General of a Mechanicum in exile, and later of a Mars retaken in stages. Accounts present the outcome of the Schism as an administrative result more than a single decisive stroke: Kane established which forges still produced ammunition and which still answered Terra, and treated allegiance as a question of supply. His contemporaries in these events include Kelbor-Hal as his direct rival, Sigismund and the Imperial Fists (whose primarch, Rogal Dorn, was responsible for the defence of Terra) as his principal Legion contacts, and the Emperor on Terra, to whom his loyalty was directed. Horus, whose war Kelbor-Hal’s faction supported, is the distant adversary.
After the Heresy, Kane is recorded as overseeing the conversion of the Mechanicum’s wartime priesthood into the Adeptus Mechanicum. Kelbor-Hal’s followers became the Dark Mechanicum, while Kane took on the administrative work of the reconstituted body. The Imperium’s technological establishment continues to derive from the half of the Mechanicum that he led. His own fate is not firmly attested, and the site therefore lists his status as missing; later tradition attaches the office of Fabricator-General to Mars rather than to any single successor. Within the Orrery graph, Kane is anchored to Mars, where the Schism was fought, and to Terra, which his supplies helped to defend, and his page belongs alongside those of Kelbor-Hal, the Dark Mechanicum, the Adeptus Mechanicum and the Imperial Fists.
