Ollanius Pius

Ollanius Pius was an ordinary Imperial Guardsman recorded as having intervened at the Emperor’s side during the Siege of Terra.

Imperial tradition holds that, during Horus’s assault on the Imperial Palace at the climax of the Horus Heresy, Pius, an unaugmented soldier holding no notable rank, placed himself between the Emperor and the Warmaster at the height of their final confrontation, an act recorded as costing him his life while briefly disrupting the blow aimed at the Emperor. The episode is preserved chiefly in later Imperial commemorative and instructional literature rather than in formal Departmento Munitorum battle records, and such sources do not consistently agree on the precise circumstances or tactical significance of the intervention.

Pius’s inclusion in accounts of the Siege of Terra is notable because rank-and-file Guardsmen are rarely named individually in Imperial commemorative record, in contrast to the primarchs, Space Marine Legions, and the Legio Custodes. Later Horus Heresy-era accounts have associated Pius, or a figure sharing his identity, with Oll Persson, a recurring wanderer described as one of a small number of Perpetuals, humans of unusual longevity said to have lived across multiple eras of human history; whether Persson and Pius are the same individual, and whether Pius in fact perished at Horus’s hand, is a point on which surviving traditions do not agree. Within Imperial doctrine, Pius nonetheless serves as an exemplar cited to illustrate that duty and sacrifice are not reserved for the transhuman or the highborn.
