Ollanius Pius
Guardsman
Ollanius Pius was an unaugmented Imperial Guardsman recorded as having intervened at the Emperor’s side during the Siege of Terra. Holding no notable rank and possessing none of the genhancements of the Legiones Astartes, he is remembered for placing himself between the Emperor and the Warmaster Horus at the climax of their final confrontation within the Imperial Palace, in the last days of the Horus Heresy. The intervention is recorded as having briefly disrupted the blow aimed at the Emperor and as having cost Pius his life.
The episode survives chiefly in later Imperial commemorative and instructional literature rather than in formal Departmento Munitorum battle rolls, and such sources do not agree consistently on the circumstances of the act, its tactical effect, or even the certainty of Pius’s death. This is itself part of why the account endures: rank-and-file Guardsmen are almost never named individually amid records dominated by primarchs, Space Marine Legions, and the Legio Custodes, and Pius’s presence in the story of Horus’s duel with the Emperor stands out precisely because of his ordinariness. Imperial doctrine has since made deliberate use of that contrast, citing Pius as an exemplar to argue that duty and sacrifice are not the preserve of the transhuman or the highborn.
A persistent later tradition identifies Pius, or a figure sharing his identity, with Oll Persson, a wanderer recorded as one of a small number of Perpetuals: humans of unusual longevity said to have lived, under different names, across successive eras of human history and to have moved among a scattered company of similarly long-lived contemporaries, including the agent John Grammaticus. Whether Persson and Pius were the same individual, and whether either version of the man in fact died at Horus’s hand during the Siege of Terra, is a point on which surviving accounts do not agree; some later tellings hold that a Perpetual could not perish so simply, while Imperial commemorative tradition treats the death as settled fact.
