Artellus Numeon

Captain of the Pyre Guard, Equerry to Vulkan

Also known as First Captain Numeon, Equerry to Vulkan

Homeworld: Nocturne

Artellus Numeon was First Captain of the Salamanders and Vulkan’s equerry, who bore his primarch’s body from Isstvan V to Nocturne in the Horus Heresy. A son of Nocturne, the Eighteenth Legion’s volcanic homeworld, he also commanded the Pyre Guard, the primarch’s close retinue, and held the closest personal standing to Vulkan of any officer in the Legion. That standing carried him into the Legion’s inner counsels as well as its battle lines. Within the Salamanders he is remembered chiefly for a single act at the close of his life, which is bound up with the Promethean Creed, the body of belief that shaped the Legion’s conduct and its reverence for fire.

At the Dropsite Massacre on Isstvan V, the Salamanders stood among the loyalist forces, alongside the Iron Hands and the Raven Guard, who were drawn into a killing ground by Legions that had declared for Horus. Vulkan was believed slain in the fighting, and the Eighteenth Legion that survived was scattered rather than defeated as a coherent force. Numeon did not accept the primarch’s death as final. Vulkan’s body had failed before and returned, a trait the Legion associated with Nocturne’s fire and with the Creed, and Numeon left Isstvan V carrying that body and a promise rather than a Legion. Accounts of the passage differ in detail, but it is recorded as running through the Ruinstorm, the warp tempest that followed Isstvan, and through territories held by forces he could not simply trust.

On Macragge, Numeon brought Vulkan’s remains before Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines, who argued for preserving the body in stasis as a relic rather than risking it on an uncertain rite. Numeon also refused the invasive preservation practices urged under the red-marked authority of the Apothecary Thiel. He accepted neither counsel and continued to Nocturne. There the priesthood judged his intent heretical, a violation of the rites owed the dead. Numeon held instead that carrying Vulkan into Mount Deathfire, the Fire Mountain at the heart of Promethean belief, was the Creed’s own demand made literal: that what the fire claims, the fire may also restore.

Numeon entered the flame of Deathfire so that Vulkan could leave it. The Legion recovered its primarch from the mountain, while Numeon did not come out and no remains are recorded as recovered. His status is therefore given as dead, though the Salamanders treat the act as a fulfilment of the Creed rather than a loss. Within the Legion it is remembered as an equerry’s sacrifice measured against a primarch’s life, not as a rule broken. On the Orrery map and timeline his story binds three places to the early years of the Heresy: Isstvan V at the massacre, Macragge during the Ruinstorm, and Nocturne at Deathfire. His contemporaries include Vulkan, Guilliman and the loyalist Legions scattered after Isstvan, and his account links the Salamanders’ survival to the wider fortunes of the loyalist cause.
