Battle of Path of Heaven
The Battle of Path of Heaven was a conflict of the Horus Heresy in the thirty-first millennium, fought on Chogoris, the homeworld of the White Scars Legion. It belongs to the period after the Istvaan III atrocity, when Horus’s rebellion had divided the Legiones Astartes and the route to Terra was becoming contested. The White Scars, led by their primarch Jaghatai Khan, held to the Emperor’s cause, and the struggle is recorded as turning on the Legion’s attempt to secure a way towards Terra that avoided the principal lanes open to the Warmaster’s forces. The name refers to that route rather than to a single field of battle. The fighting took place on and around Chogoris, the world from which Jaghatai Khan was raised to command the Legion, so that the contest bore on the Legion’s origins as well as its strategic position. The principal loyalist participants were the White Scars and their Khans, whose doctrine of speed, encirclement and strike-and-withdraw shaped the course of the campaign. Accounts differ on the composition of the opposing force and on how far its commanders acted in concert with Horus, and this entry does not assign a leadership that the record does not firmly support. What is consistent is that the engagement was fought at a moment of divided loyalties, with the outcome bearing on whether the Legion could take part in the defence of Terra. In the aftermath, the White Scars remained aligned with the loyalist cause and continued their movement towards the Sol System, where the Legion is recorded at the Siege of Terra.
