Noyan-Khan

Noyan-Khan is a command style of the White Scars Legion, recorded for officers such as Qin Fai and Ganzorig at the Siege of Terra. The word belongs to the Chogorian tradition from which the Fifth Legion drew its character, and it appears in the Legion’s record as a style attached to a warrior’s name, in the manner of Hasik Noyan-Khan. Its allegiance is to the White Scars and to their primarch, Jaghatai Khan. The precise place of the style within the Legion’s formal ranks is not set out here, and accounts differ on how it relates to the simple style Khan.

The clearest attestation is in the order of battle for the Siege of Terra, where the White Scars contingent lists Qin Fai Noyan-Khan, recorded as killed, and Ganzorig Noyan-Khan, recorded among the survivors, alongside other Legion commanders such as Shiban Khan and Jangsai Khan. This is the only dated context in which the style is firmly bound to named individuals, and this dossier does not supply campaigns, duels or exchanges beyond it. Earlier and later holders, if any, are not established well enough to be set down as fact, and later tradition should not be read back into the entry.

The Noyan-Khan style is therefore best understood as one marker of the White Scars’ command tradition, which emphasises speed, pursuit and the decisive strike rather than fixed garrisons. On the Orrery map the Legion is anchored to Chogoris, its recruiting world, and the attested holders are placed on Terra during the Siege in the closing phase of the Horus Heresy.
