Feast of Blades
The Feast of Blades is a periodic martial tournament of the Black Templars, in which the Chapter’s Sword Brethren compete in single combat for honour. As successors of the Imperial Fists, the Black Templars measure their warriors not by garrison strength but by zeal and skill at arms, and the Feast stands as the clearest expression of that ethos: a gathering at which champions test blade, bolter, and doctrine against one another under the eyes of their Chaplains and commanders. It is recorded as a tradition of long standing within the Chapter’s crusading culture, one bound up with the search for worth that runs through every Black Templars vow. The tournament is held roughly once a century, its venue rotating among fortress-monasteries and crusade encampments associated with the wider Imperial Fists successor lineage rather than fixed to a single world. Sword Brethren and aspirant champions travel from scattered crusade fleets to compete, and accounts differ on the precise trials involved, though single combat, tests of endurance, and demonstrations of tactical doctrine are consistently described as central to its course. Victory carries no material reward beyond renown; the honour of the Feast is said to weigh heavily in later consideration for elevation among the Sword Brethren and, on rare occasions, for the mantle of Emperor’s Champion. Because the Feast draws warriors from across the Black Templars’ dispersed crusades, it functions as one of the few recurring points at which the Chapter’s far-flung companies and their Imperial Fists successor kin take stock of one another’s progress and standing.
