Indomitus Crusade
The Indomitus Crusade was a galaxy-spanning Imperial relief campaign launched from Terra by Roboute Guilliman in 999.M41. It began after Guilliman’s revival from ten millennia of stasis and his audience with the Emperor within the Sanctum Imperialis on Terra, an encounter that saw him proclaimed Lord Commander of the Imperium. The crusade answered the catastrophe of the Cicatrix Maledictum, the great warp rift that split the galaxy into Imperium Sanctus and Imperium Nihilus and cut countless worlds and Chapters off from Terran support. To furnish its armies, the Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl completed the Ultima Founding, the mass creation of Primaris Space Marines, whom Guilliman took as the crusade’s core strength. Departing Terra with Fleet Primus, Guilliman drove the crusade along a shifting, decades-long front, reinforcing depleted Chapters with Primaris recruits and breaking sieges laid during the chaos that followed the Rift’s opening. Its fleets reached Baal in time to relieve the Blood Angels and their successor Chapters from Hive Fleet Leviathan, and its forces contested Death Guard incursions and other Chaos-aligned threats across both the isolated Imperium Nihilus and the more accessible worlds of Imperium Sanctus. The campaign continued for roughly a century, extending into the early decades of M42, as Guilliman divided his attention between the advancing crusade and the government of the Imperium from Terra. By its formal end, the Indomitus Crusade had distributed Primaris reinforcements among dozens of Chapters and confirmed Guilliman as Imperial Regent, ruling in the Emperor’s name from Terra. The Cicatrix Maledictum itself remained unhealed, and Imperium Nihilus continued to face war and isolation largely without direct Terran support. The crusade’s close is reckoned among the opening events of the Psychic Awakening, the age of intensifying warp activity and renewed conflict that followed, and its contemporaries, among them the Blood Angels of Baal, the Death Guard under Mortarion, and the reinforced or newly raised Chapters of the Ultima Founding, remain bound to its legacy.
