Unification Wars / Solar conquest
The Unification Wars, or Solar conquest, were the M30 campaign that unified the Sol System under the future Emperor of Mankind. Fought principally on Terra, with concluding actions on Luna and Mars, the wars brought the Sol System under a single authority for the first time since the onset of the Age of Strife, pitting the Emperor and his forces against the techno-barbarian warlord-states and rival technocracies into which the home world had fractured. Their end is recorded as the immediate precondition for the Great Crusade that followed. The wars had their roots in the collapse of Terra’s unified civilisation during the Age of Strife, when warp storms severed the Sol System from the wider galaxy and left Old Earth divided among warlords, technocrats and petty tyrants. Many of these rulers commanded relics of a more advanced age, turned to cruel and destructive ends, and their rivalries had reduced much of the planet to ruin. The Emperor is recorded as having worked in secret for generations before openly taking the field, preparing the instruments of a war intended not merely to conquer but to end the anarchy that had left humanity divided and vulnerable. Once begun, the campaign was fought largely by the Thunder Warriors, formidable early soldiers created as the Emperor’s instrument of conquest, together with human armies loyal to the unification cause. Named techno-barbarian domains and warlord states fell in succession, though many individual campaigns are remembered only in outline rather than detailed chronicle. Malcador the Sigillite is recorded among the Emperor’s earliest and most enduring counsellors through this period, while a body of warriors later known as the Legio Custodes emerged as the Emperor’s own household guard, distinct from the Thunder Warriors and from the Space Marine Legions still to come. Once Terra itself was subdued, the Emperor turned to Luna, whose pacification is counted among the wars’ concluding acts, and to Mars, where the ruling Fabricator-General and the Mechanicum entered alliance through negotiation rather than invasion, an accord later formalised as the Treaty of Mars binding the Mechanicum to the nascent Imperium while preserving its autonomy over the forge world and the wider Ring of Mars. By the wars’ end the Sol System stood unified under a single authority for the first time since the Age of Strife’s onset, with Terra as its capital and Mars as its indispensable forge and ally. The Thunder Warriors, their purpose achieved and their engineered nature judged unsustainable for a lasting peace, were largely stood down and superseded in the years that followed by the newly created Space Marine Legions. Having first secured Sol, the Emperor turned his gaze outward to the wider galaxy, and the unification of the home system is recorded as the direct precondition for the Great Crusade. The Unification Wars sit at the head of a sequence of conflicts fought within the same gravity well, alongside the First Pacification of Luna, the Martian Compact, the later Solar War, and ultimately the Siege of Terra, each returning to the same worlds and orbital strongholds the Emperor first brought under one rule. Terra’s status as the fixed origin point of Imperial cartography, and the Sol System’s enduring role as the Imperium’s most heavily defended territory, both trace directly to the outcome of this founding campaign, which stands as the closing chapter of the Age of Strife and the opening of a new order for humanity.
