Baskevyl

Baskevyl is a major of the Tanith First-and-Only, an Astra Militarum regiment recruited partly from refugees of the Verghast hive world. Born Meritous Vox Baskevyl, he is counted among the Verghastite contingent absorbed into the regiment following the defence of Vervunhive, after which the unit retained the Tanith name while drawing substantially on Verghastite manpower to replace losses sustained during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.

Within the regiment, Baskevyl is depicted as a capable and even-tempered officer who advanced steadily through its command structure, eventually serving among the senior majors under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt. Accounts of the regiment’s campaigning describe him taking on increasing administrative and tactical responsibility as the Tanith First’s original officer cadre was thinned by sustained combat losses, making him one of the figures relied upon to maintain cohesion between the regiment’s Tanith-born and Verghastite elements. He is also recorded as forming a domestic partnership with fellow Verghastite Tona Criid, sharing in the raising of children informally fostered within the regiment.

Baskevyl’s standing within the Tanith First rests on his role as a stabilising senior officer during the regiment’s later Crusade-era campaigns rather than on any single celebrated action. He is representative of the wider Verghastite integration into a regiment nominally named for a world its Verghastite members never called home, and later accounts of the regiment’s fortunes describe his position becoming uncertain amid the heavy losses and dispersal experienced during operations on Urdesh.
