Tona Criid

Tona Criid came out of Vervunhive's scrap and smoke, not Tanith's trees, and made the Ghosts take her anyway. She pulled the children Dalin and Yoncy out of a massacre, put on the black knives, and turned hive fighting into something the Tanith could use.

She took the colours, the promotions, and the habit of surviving officers who expected her to die on schedule. Verghastites in the First-and-Only still point at Criid when someone asks if the regiment is only a dead world's club.

The Ghosts collect strays. Criid is the stray who started collecting back, which is why the children lived long enough to become a problem of their own.
