Barthol Van Voytz

Barthol Van Voytz is a Lord General of the Astra Militarum and a senior commander of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade’s Imperial Guard forces. He is counted among the Warmasters’ senior general officers, a cohort that included Lord Generals Bulledin, Lugo, and Urienz alongside Lord Militants such as Cybon, who together held field command across the crusade’s decades-long effort to reclaim the Sabbat Worlds sector from the forces of Chaos.

Van Voytz’s standing within the crusade’s high command intersected repeatedly with the career of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, commander of the Tanith First-and-Only. Accounts of the regiment’s campaigns describe Van Voytz as a lasting patron of Gaunt, shielding him from the political consequences of contested field decisions on more than one occasion, even as other elements of the crusade’s command structure, and Inquisitorial oversight, viewed Gaunt with suspicion. This patronage placed Van Voytz among the handful of senior officers whose favour allowed the Tanith regiment to keep operating at the crusade’s front despite the loss of its home world and the friction its methods provoked among more conventional commanders.

Records of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade’s senior officer corps do not agree on Van Voytz’s ultimate fate: some listings of the crusade’s command count him among its dead, while other accounts of the Tanith First-and-Only’s later campaigns continue to describe his patronage of Gaunt as an ongoing feature of the regiment’s standing within the high command. His career is bound to the Sabbat Worlds theatre across the crusade’s span from Slaydo’s opening campaigns to Macaroth’s later prosecution of the war, and his contemporaries include fellow Lords Militant and General officers such as Lugo and Bulledin, as well as Gaunt himself, whose fortunes he repeatedly shaped from within the crusade’s command echelon.
