General Sturm

General Sturm was an Imperial Guard general of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, executed for treason by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt on Menazoid Epsilon.

Sturm held senior general officer rank among the Imperial Guard forces committed to the Sabbat Worlds Crusade and directed troops alongside the Tanith First-and-Only during the contested campaign on Menazoid Epsilon. He regarded Gaunt’s authority with open contempt, treating the colonel-commissar’s field commission — granted directly by the dying Warmaster Slaydo — as an affront to the Guard’s regular chain of command, and the resulting rivalry shaped the disposition of forces during the fighting. Accounts of the Menazoid Epsilon campaign describe Sturm as having been complicit with the enemy, a betrayal that placed Imperial troops, including Gaunt’s own regiment, in far greater danger than the sanctioned campaign plan allowed for. When the treason came to light, Gaunt confronted Sturm directly and shot him dead before witnesses rather than referring the matter to a formal court-martial.

The killing, though later accepted as justified by the evidence of Sturm’s treachery, was carried out outside the Guard’s ordinary judicial process, and this irregularity followed Gaunt for years afterward. Officers sympathetic to Sturm and factions within the crusade’s high command invoked the killing to question Gaunt’s fitness for command, a controversy that resurfaced as the Sabbat Worlds Crusade continued under Warmaster Macaroth. General Sturm’s death on Menazoid Epsilon accordingly stands less as a campaign in its own right than as the origin of a lasting shadow over Gaunt’s record, binding his name permanently to the wider chronicle of the Tanith First-and-Only’s service in the crusade.
