Elim Rawne

Elim Rawne is a Major of the Tanith First-and-Only, one of the original Tanith-born officers who became Ibram Gaunt’s most trusted second-in-command. He belongs to the tradition of Tanith soldiers raised from a world destroyed on the very day the regiment was mustered into Imperial Guard service, a loss that shaped the character of the unit and its survivors.

Accounts of Rawne’s early service describe him as ambitious and resentful of Gaunt’s command, a friction that placed him among the regiment’s more troublesome officers in its formative campaigns. Over the course of the Tanith First-and-Only’s long service within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, this early antagonism gave way to a durable working loyalty, and Rawne rose to become Gaunt’s principal second-in-command, entrusted with independent commands and difficult field decisions. He is remembered as a capable close-quarters fighter, favouring a blade in a regiment already noted for its knife-work, and later accounts associate him with Merity Chass, a ward of Gaunt’s household, as his standing within the regiment’s inner circle deepened.

Rawne’s standing rests on his position as one of the few Tanith-born officers to endure the regiment’s losses across successive campaigns of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, alongside contemporaries such as Colonel Colm Corbec, under the overall command of Ibram Gaunt. His career binds a single soldier’s trajectory to the wider fate of the Tanith First-and-Only as it fought, and was steadily remade, across the Sabbat Worlds theatre.
