Torquemada Coteaz
Inquisitor Lord, High Protector of the Formosa Sector
Also known as Inquisitor Coteaz, Lord Coteaz
Torquemada Coteaz is an Inquisitor Lord of the Ordo Malleus, the Inquisition’s daemon-hunting ordo, and High Protector of the Formosa Sector. His authority as an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor traces to the Holy Ordos’ seat on Terra, though his working life is spent far from the Throneworld, patrolling a border region troubled by cults, xenos incursion, and the ever-present threat of daemonic corruption. He is accompanied everywhere by a psyber-eagle, a servo-construct that acts as an additional, tireless set of eyes and is said to cry out when the Warp attempts to deceive its master.
Coteaz rose to prominence not through personal swordwork but through an unusually large and heterogeneous retinue, assembled from Imperial Guard storm troopers, mystics, interrogators, and Space Marines drawn from several different Chapters rather than one favoured allegiance. This willingness to call on whatever asset the situation demands, Deathwatch kill-teams, Adepta Sororitas squads, or reformed heretics with useful knowledge, sets him apart from Inquisitors who work alone or through a single order, and it is on this coordinated, multi-faction response that his reputation as a daemon-hunter chiefly rests. He established Formosa as a fortress-seat of the Inquisition, using it as a base from which such composite forces can be gathered and dispatched quickly.
His peers in the Inquisition frequently apply the term Puritan to him as an insult, implying rigidity or excessive caution, and Coteaz accepts the label without argument, treating it as a fair description of his methods rather than a slight. That equanimity was tested when a cultist under interrogation prophesied that Coteaz himself would eventually fall to Chaos; he answered by destroying the cult in its entirety and continuing his duties unchanged, and he treats the Extremis Diabolus, the Inquisition’s most severe judgement on a world or individual deemed lost to the Warp, as a sentence to be carried out rather than a warning to be weighed. This consistency, trusting his psyber-eagle’s alarm over any plea or protestation, has made him difficult for infiltrators to deceive.
Coteaz remains active in the present era, holding his post on Formosa and continuing to draw together temporary alliances of Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, and Guard regiments whenever the sector’s daemonic incursions demand a response larger than any single force could provide. The tally of daemons he has banished and cults he has extinguished stands as the practical record by which he is judged, both by the Ordo Malleus that empowers him and by the rivals who still distrust his methods.
