Macer Varren was captain of the World Eaters Twelfth who refused the Nails' politics, stayed the Emperor's on Isstvan III, and took Malcador's black as a Knight-Errant rather than a berzerker's excuse. Nuceria had made him. He declined the rest of the lesson.
On Molech he lost an arm to Horus Aximand and kept the war anyway. On Terra, in the White Mountain, the Lord of the Flies tried to wear him. Varren put a grenade into that possession rather than let Solun Decius's daemon finish the job through a loyalist's throat.
He died by his own hand so the passenger would die with him. The Twelfth never got their captain back. The Knights-Errant got a story they do not tell for comfort: sometimes the only clean cut left is the one you aim inward.
