Endryd Haar

Endryd Haar was a World Eaters legionary of the Horus Heresy who survived the Isstvan V Dropsite Massacre and thereafter served among the Blackshields. He belongs to the small number of World Eaters recorded as having remained loyal to the Emperor while the XII Legion, under its primarch Angron, sided with Warmaster Horus. Nuceria, the world associated with Angron’s enslavement and with the Legion’s recruitment, is given as his place of origin, so that his allegiance stands in contrast to that of the Legion that raised him.

Haar’s Legion of origin was among the Traitor forces at Isstvan V, the Heresy’s first pitched battle, fought in the Isstvan system after the atrocity on Isstvan III. The loyalist Space Marines of the Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard were landed on the surface at the Urgall dropsite and were betrayed by the Traitor Legions committed to the assault, among them the World Eaters. Accounts place Haar among those who did not take the Traitor side and who survived the destruction of the loyalist force, not as part of an organised loyalist formation but as an isolated combatant cut off from any command. Nothing reliable is recorded of his rank, company or exact conduct on the field, and accounts differ on the detail of how individual survivors escaped the dropsite.

After the massacre, Haar is held to have joined the loose association of unmarked survivors later termed the Blackshields. This was composed of loyalist remnants drawn from several Legions, including some that had turned Traitor as a whole. Without the insignia, chain of command or resupply of a parent Legion, these warriors fought in small, self-directed groups against Traitor forces during the later campaigns of the Heresy, their plain black wargear standing in place of Legion heraldry. Haar’s service is attested chiefly through this association rather than through any recorded place in a World Eaters company, and his fate is not established, which is why his status is given as unknown. Among his contemporaries, the Blackshields as a body are better documented than most of their individual members.
