Torquemada Coteaz

Torquemada Coteaz is an Inquisitor Lord of the Ordo Malleus, the daemon-hunting branch of the Inquisition, and High Protector of the Formosa Sector. He serves the Holy Ordos, whose authority is exercised in the name of the Emperor from Terra, and is counted among the Puritan Inquisitors, who hold that the Imperium’s survival depends on strict doctrinal orthodoxy and the swift destruction of corruption. He is recorded as travelling with a psyber-eagle, a servo-construct said to cry out when it detects deception or the influence of the Warp.

Coteaz is known less for personal combat than for the size and variety of the forces he assembles. His retinue is recorded as drawing on Inquisitorial henchmen, storm troopers and Imperial Guard regiments, and, when a threat demands it, Space Marines from several Chapters, Deathwatch kill-teams, and Adepta Sororitas squads, rather than a single favoured allegiance. Formosa serves as the base from which such composite forces are gathered and dispatched. Fellow Inquisitors use the word Puritan of him as a reproach, and he is said to accept the label as an accurate description of his methods. A later tradition holds that a cultist under interrogation prophesied his eventual fall to Chaos, and that Coteaz responded by destroying the cult entirely and continuing his duties unchanged. His life before his appointment to Formosa is not well recorded, and accounts differ on the particulars of his early career.

Coteaz’s standing rests on this practice of coordinated, multi-faction action against daemonic and heretical threats, which distinguishes him from Inquisitors who work alone or through a single order. The Grey Knights are the Space Marine Chapter most closely associated with the Ordo Malleus, and his coalition-building sits within the same wider effort against the Warp. He belongs to the 41st Millennium, contemporary with other Inquisitors such as Kryptman of the Ordo Xenos, whose priorities and methods differ markedly from those of a Puritan daemon-hunter. His activity is attached to the Formosa Sector rather than a single fixed battlefield, with Terra as the seat of the authority he serves, and he is regarded as active in the present era.
