Viktor Hark

Viktor Hark is a Commissar of the Astra Militarum, attached to the Tanith First-and-Only regiment. Commissars are political and disciplinary officers embedded within Imperial Guard formations, tasked with maintaining morale, enforcing doctrinal conformity, and, where necessary, summarily punishing dereliction or defeatism among the rank and file. Hark’s attachment to the Tanith First-and-Only places him within one of the more closely chronicled regiments of the Astra Militarum, a formation raised from the now-destroyed world of Tanith and noted for its distinctive scoutwoodcraft traditions.

Within the regiment, Hark serves alongside its command staff, most notably Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, whose dual role as both commanding officer and commissar is itself a departure from standard Guard practice. Accounts of the regiment’s campaigns describe Hark taking on increasing administrative and disciplinary responsibility over time, including record-keeping duties that later inform the regiment’s official chronicles. His relationship with Gaunt and with the Tanith rank and file is recorded as having developed from initial mutual wariness, typical of the tension between a unit’s line officers and its attached commissar, toward a more settled working partnership as shared campaigns accumulated.

Hark’s standing within the Tanith First-and-Only is that of a senior commissarial officer whose function is inseparable from the regiment’s internal cohesion and its documented history. As one of the commissars most closely associated with the formation across its campaigns, he is significant chiefly as a figure of institutional continuity: a representative of the Departmento Munitorum’s political oversight apparatus who, in later tradition, is remembered as much for his role in compiling the regiment’s record as for his disciplinary function in the field.
