Age of Redemption
The Age of Redemption denotes the period of Ecclesiarchal reform that followed the Age of Apostasy, centred on Terra in the wake of Goge Vandire’s fall. It began with the reformation led by Sebastian Thor, whose Convocation reconstituted the Adeptus Ministorum under the oversight of the High Lords of Terra, ending the unchecked authority the Ecclesiarch had wielded during the preceding Reign of Blood. The era is reckoned among the pivotal turning points of Imperial governance, marking the point at which the Church of the Imperial Creed was formally subordinated to secular check. Thor’s reforms unfolded through a prolonged campaign of persuasion and confrontation, rallying the Ecclesiarchy’s scattered loyalists and elements of the Adeptus Terra against Vandire’s regime before securing ratification of a new constitution for the Ministorum. Central to this settlement was the reorganisation of the Ecclesiarchy’s military orders into the disciplined Orders Militant that would evolve into the Adepta Sororitas, alongside an enlarged role for the Inquisition in monitoring Ecclesiarchal conduct. Accounts differ on the precise duration of the transition, but later tradition holds that the settlement held firm for the remainder of the thirty-seventh millennium and into the thirty-eighth. In the aftermath, the Ecclesiarchy that emerged was formally weaker in temporal power yet more stable, its Ecclesiarchs bound by the checks Thor had instituted and answerable to the High Lords of Terra alongside the Inquisition. Sebastian Thor himself was raised to sainthood for his role in ending the Reign of Blood, and the Age of Redemption is remembered as the precedent underpinning the balance of power between Terra’s great institutions in the millennia since. Its legacy links directly to the Age of Apostasy that preceded it and to the founding character of the Adepta Sororitas, both essential context for the Imperium’s post-Apostasy order.
