Battle of Gorgon Bar
The Battle of Gorgon Bar is an engagement of the Siege of Terra, fought along the Imperial Palace’s outer defences during the war’s final phase. Gorgon Bar names one of the fortified lines ringing the Palace, and the battle there belongs to the wider collapse and defence of those works as Horus’s armies pressed toward the inner precincts. Its place in the chronology sets it among the Siege’s later, most attritional actions, when the difference between adjoining strongpoints was often measured in hours rather than days. Accounts place traitor siege formations and their war engines against Imperial Fists garrison troops and allied loyalist defenders holding the bar under sustained bombardment and armoured assault. The fighting is remembered chiefly for the scale of matériel thrown against a single stretch of wall: void shields, void-breaching ordnance, and Titan-scale engines contesting ground that infantry alone could not hold. As with much of the Siege’s middle and late stages, precise unit dispositions and the sequence of the bar’s fall or relief are recorded unevenly, and later tradition sometimes compresses several actions along the Palace perimeter into a single named engagement. Gorgon Bar’s significance lies less in an isolated outcome than in its place within the accumulating pressure on the Palace defences that culminated in the storming of the inner gates. It is remembered alongside the other named bars, gates, and barbicans of the Siege of Terra as evidence of how thoroughly the Imperial Palace was contested before Horus’s final defeat, and it is best read in conjunction with the broader account of the siege and the fortress-world of Terra that it sought to protect.
