Battle of the Kalium Gate
The Battle of the Kalium Gate was a defensive action fought at one of the Imperial Palace’s outer gates during the Siege of Terra in 014.M31. The gate stood among the lesser-chronicled crossings of the Palace’s outer curtain, a fortified approach whose loss or survival bore on the wider defence of the Imperial seat against the Warmaster Horus’s besieging armies. Its name is preserved chiefly in accounts of the siege’s outer perimeter actions, fought in the shadow of better-recorded engagements at the Lion’s Gate and the Eternity Gate. Accounts differ on the precise sequence of the fighting, but tradition holds that elements of the Legio Custodes and Imperial Fists garrison, alongside Palace militia levies, held the Kalium Gate against repeated assaults by Traitor forces seeking to open a secondary breach in the Palace defences. The battle is remembered as one of attrition rather than manoeuvre: waves of assault troops and armour ground against fortifications raised under Rogal Dorn’s direction, with the defenders’ cohesion credited to the gate’s integration into the Palace’s wider network of strongpoints. Whether the gate ultimately fell or held through to the siege’s end is recorded inconsistently across later tellings. Whatever its final outcome, the action at the Kalium Gate is treated as emblematic of the numerous, less celebrated defences that comprised the Siege of Terra alongside its famous set pieces. It is invoked in later reckonings of the siege as evidence of the depth and cost of the Palace’s defence beyond the principal gates, and it is often considered alongside those other actions when the siege’s full scope is discussed.
