Eighth Founding
The Eighth Founding is one of the numbered Foundings that periodically raised new Space Marine Chapters under Terra’s sanction. It belongs to the long sequence of Chapter-raising events that began with the Second Founding, the post-Horus Heresy reorganisation in which the surviving Space Marine Legions were broken into smaller, Codex Astartes-compliant Chapters of roughly one thousand warriors each. Each subsequent Founding, the Eighth among them, was authorised by the Adeptus Terra as the Imperium sought to sustain the strength of its Astartes forces without recreating the vast, legion-scale hosts that had made the Heresy possible. Orrery’s chronology places the Eighth Founding within the 34th millennium, several centuries after the Second Founding’s initial reorganisation. Accounts of which Chapters trace their origin to this particular Founding are not consistently recorded, and later tradition holds that its new-raised companies were dispersed across the Imperium’s frontiers much as earlier Foundings had been, reinforcing garrisons and crusade fleets rather than forming a single unified campaign. As with other early Foundings, the event is remembered less as a battle or crusade than as an administrative and martial milestone in the Adeptus Astartes’ expansion. In the present era the Eighth Founding survives chiefly as a chronological anchor, cited when a Chapter’s lineage is traced back through the sequence of Foundings to the Second Founding’s original division of the Legions and, beyond that, to the First Founding’s primarch-led hosts. It sits alongside later, better-documented waves such as the Cursed Founding and the Ultima Founding as one of the many points at which Terra renewed the Imperium’s Astartes strength. No independent campaign or crisis is attached to its name; its significance lies in the Chapters it is presumed to have contributed to the Imperium’s defence, whatever became of them in the millennia since.
