Eleventh Founding
The Eleventh Founding is recorded as one of the numbered Foundings sanctioned from Terra to raise new Space Marine Chapters from reserved gene-seed. Like the First Founding that divided the primarchs’ Legions into Chapters under the Codex Astartes, and the several numbered Foundings that followed across the middle millennia of the Imperium, it fell to the High Lords of Terra and the Adeptus Terra’s military bureaucracy to authorise the exercise, apportion gene-seed stocks, and confirm the new Chapters’ rights and territories. Accounts differ as to the precise year of the Eleventh Founding, though it is generally placed within the thirty-fifth millennium, a period in which the Imperium’s frontier garrisons required steady reinforcement. The Founding itself followed the pattern established by its predecessors: aspirant worlds were screened by the Adeptus Terra and allied Chapters, tithes of recruits were raised, and gene-seed drawn from Terra’s vaults was seeded into newly constituted Chapters, each granted a Chapter Master, a fortress-monastery or strike-cruiser fleet, and a mandated theatre of war. Which crusades and campaigns absorbed the Chapters of the Eleventh Founding is not consistently recorded, and later tradition holds that several were dispatched directly to contested frontier sectors rather than held in reserve, a practice common to Foundings raised in response to sustained pressure on the Imperium’s borders rather than to a single crisis. As with other numbered Foundings of the middle millennia, the Chapters raised in the Eleventh Founding are unevenly attested: some are named in Departmento Munitorum archives held on Terra without surviving record of their battle honours, while others’ later fates were absorbed into subsequent reorganisations and Chapter re-designations. The Eleventh Founding is chiefly remembered as one link in the continuous chain by which Terra has maintained the Adeptus Astartes’ numbers across ten thousand years, its incomplete records forming part of the same Terran archive that also preserves memory of the First Founding and the numbered Foundings that followed it.
