Eternity Gate Defence
The Eternity Gate Defence was the climactic action of the Siege of Terra, fought at the principal gateway into the Sanctum Imperialis as Horus’ armies closed. By the final weeks of the siege, the Warmaster’s traitor legions had broken the Palace’s outer bastions and void shields, forcing the defence inward to the last approaches before the Emperor’s own sanctum. The Eternity Gate, one of the great portals shielding this innermost precinct, became the focal point through which any traitor advance on the Emperor would have to pass, making its defence the last practical barrier of the entire war. Rogal Dorn’s Imperial Fists, alongside the Legio Custodes and remaining loyalist forces gathered within the Palace, held the gate under sustained assault, absorbing losses that later accounts describe as ruinous even by the standards of the siege. The arrival of Sanguinius and the Blood Angels, including the Sanguinary Guard, proved decisive: the primarch led the final charge that broke the traitor cordon and forced the gate, after which he chose to press on alone into the void above Terra to confront Horus directly aboard the Vengeful Spirit rather than allow the assault to stall at the threshold. The gate’s fall opened the way to the war’s last acts: Sanguinius’ death in single combat with Horus, and the Emperor’s own intervention that ended the Warmaster and, by most accounts, effectively closed the Horus Heresy. In the present era the Eternity Gate is remembered within the Imperial Palace as the point at which the siege’s outer war gave way to its final, personal reckoning, and it remains bound in Imperial memory to the deaths and victories that followed immediately beyond it.
